CyanogenMod 9 Nightly ROMs Now Available For Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S And XOOM

The first proper CyanogenMod 9 releases have been found. Since November the team has been trying to get their ICS builds working well enough for nightly release. If you own a Galaxy Nexus, a Nexus S or a Motorola XOOM then you can download the ROM’s now (link here).

If you don’t know CyanogenMod terminology, lets run through it:

  • Verizon Galaxy Nexus – “toro”
  • HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus – “maguro”
  • Verizon Motorola XOOM – “stringray”
  • WiFi Motorola XOOM – “wingray”
  • GSM Nexus S – “crespo”
  • CDMA Nexus S 4G – “crespo4G”

So, why are these important? CM9 ROM’s previously mentioned were compiled by someone not from the CM team. Because anyone can use CM code, people often create their own ROM’s from it. These six ROM’s are actual CM9 releases, not just random compiled ROM’s.

These are still nightly ROM’s and so you should expect some bugs and it’ll be a good few weeks until RC’s arrive. And if you haven’t rooted your device, then you can’t install this ROM; much like any custom ROM you have to install a custom bootloader.

Why has CyanogenMod focused on these devices? Because they are developer devices. The Nexus ones are obvious developer devices and the XOOM was the first proper tablet and so is suited for developers. Sometime soon we’ll have CyanogenMod on other devices. The CyanogenMod team go by the viewpoint of “No ETA” but given their quick turnaround we can expect them to release release candidates within roughly a month. Please note if you have one of these devices and want to install the ROM you’ll also need to get the Google Apps package (that is, if you want Gmail, Android Market and the like) which can be found here.
