How To Install Android 4.0.3 ICS Firmware On Your HTC Vivid

As much as we want everything to be automatic in this technology-driven world of ours, there are just things we need to do manually especially when we are taking some risks. While others believe computers perform better than humans, there are just things that need to be done using the human mind and one best example of it is when you decide to update your HTC Vivid Smartphone to run on the latest Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

So, without further adieu, here is the step-by-step guide to manually update your HTC Vivid with ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware.

Step 1: First and foremost, you should backup everything in your device including your contacts and data.

Step 2: Download HTC Vivid ICS Android 4.0 Package and save it in your computer.

Step 3: Connect your device to your computer using USB cable.

Step 4: Copy the downloaded package to your device’s SD card. Be sure to put it in the root directory because saving it in sub-directories will make it undetectable by Vivid.

Step 5: Turn your device OFF.

Step 6: Put Vivid in Recovery Mode. To do so, simultaneously press the Volume DOWN button and Power button.

Step 7: When your device is ON, choose “Boot Loader” by pressing the Power button once again.

Step 8: Backup your working ROM just to be safe. Just select “Backup and Restore” then “Backup” to continue this process.

Step 9: When the backup is done, it’s time to clear all the data as well as partitions. Select “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” then continue with “Wipe Cache Partition.” It will take just a few seconds to complete.

Step 10: Now, it’s time to install Ice Cream Sandwich. Select “Install zip from SD Card” and continue with “Choose zip from SD Card.” Locate the zip file you just saved in your SD Card (ICS Android 4.0 Package for HTC Vivid).

Step 11: Let the device do its thing. It will take just a very short while to finish. When done, it could be that your device would boot automatically. Otherwise, you will be brought back to “Recovery Mode.” If so, choose “Go Back” and “Reboot System Now.”

Step 12: Check if your HTC Vivid now runs on ICS. Go to Settings => About Phone => Firmware Version. If it’s successful you will see Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich on your screen.

Well, the probability of getting this tutorial correctly is 99%. So far, there is no negative feedback regarding this process, so, you will do just fine.

Well, these were some of the worst instructions ever. After giving it a shot, I thought I had bricked my new phone. Only the HTC logo and then a black screen. Finally, after staying up all night and working for about 10 hours on it I managed to fix the problem.

Anyone who’s messed up their phone just go here to fix it:

Note that the bootloader of the phone has to be unlocked for this recovery to work.
