Motorola DROID RAZR Gets First Android Ice Cream Sandwich ROM

Many developers are currently working day and night to release Ice Cream Sandwich to various devices spanning from the hugely popular but slightly old Nexus One through to the latest and greatest such as the HTC Rezound. However, now it seems like one more phone finally gets Ice Cream Sandwich, the Droid RAZR. Many were disappointed when Motorola announced the device would have a locked bootloader. But it seems that a developer (DroidTh3ory) has bypassed this restriction via what he calls a dual-boot hack. He then progressed to develop ICS for the device and has now finally got a bootable version running.

Now before all you Droid RAZR owners get excited please bear in mind this is a very early beta. The touchscreen is woefully inaccurate and other things are also significantly broken. This isn’t a ROM suitable for daily use. And the ROM itself has yet to be released, but if this changes we will update you. We must bear in mind this is a new phone and as such developers aren’t too experienced with it yet. Also, the locked bootloader has hampered development.

The developer has released a video, so you can see for yourself it running albeit with a plethora of bugs, including a touchscreen that isn’t properly usable, significant slow downs and the occasional animation is messed up. However, the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the device work fine, and the OS knows not to display the onscreen buttons (aka. Galaxy Nexus style).

Despite the seemingly unusable port, we must give credit to DroidTh3ory; this is certainly the closest to a working ICS ROM we’ve seen on the Droid RAZR, and given how slow Motorola typically are with updates, this might reduce the wait.
