Some of us just don’t have the cash to drop $500 on an iPad and thanks to companies like Viewsonic we don’t have to. AT CES 2012 the company had their latest line of budget Android powered tablets for us to check out including the latest addition to the lineup: the Viewsonic ViewPad E70. Coming in at only $169, the ViewPad E70 is complete with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but not too much else really stands out.
The ViewPad E70 has a 1 GH single-core processor with its 7-inch display (running at 800x600p). While it’s great to see as many devices as possible getting the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the ViewPad E70 could be a case where the hardware just doesn’t stack up to the software. The device has a pretty low resolution and is slow running the OS—it doesn’t handle hardware intense apps very well, but for a price tag of just $169 it does what it needs to. Representatives from Viewsonic said that the tablet is geared toward families who want an additional tablet, perhaps their 3rd or 4th device but don’t need another extremely powerful slate. They used, for example, a family with both parents owning a tab already and wanting to get their child one: the ViewPad E70, which is set to be released sometime in March, would be the perfect fit.
In addition to the E70, Viewsonic also had the ViewPad 10pi and ViewPad 10e available to check out. Both of the tablets are what you would expect from a budget tablet (those these aren’t as cheap as the E70). The ViewPad 10e currently has Android 2.3 while the 10pi runs both Windows 7 and Android Gingerbread in dual-boot.
Both of the tablets are lightweight and thin for a budget tablet, but there are some noticeable lag and glitch issues. You can’t expect much more from a budget tablet, though. If you want the 10e you can get your hands on it for $279.
